An Interface for Analyzing and Integrating Different Sensory Modalities
نویسندگان
چکیده
This MATLAB interface is aimed at analyzing and integrating two different imaging modalities optical topography system (OTS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI provides information about the anatomical structure of the brain, while OTS displays the changes in the cerebral blood flow in the form of a topographic image. Eight subjects underwent an MRI and OTS exams at Miami Children’s Hospital, during which an anatomical MRI images and optical topographic maps were acquired. In order to map the motor functional areas in the brain, a functional experiment is performed by using OTS and is based on a repeated finger tapping task alternated with relaxed states. The developed interface displays a sequence of 2D topographic maps depicting the finger tapping experiment in a form of a movie. Moreover, it displays the anatomical MRI slices in different views (2D-3D): transaxial, sagittal, coronal; and 3D head model constructed from the anatomical MRI slices. Therefore the 2-D videos now extend to 3-D videos of the topographic maps that can be projected on 3-D head models or on the cortical surface of the brain. The interface integrates both modalities MRI-OTS in 3D revealing excellent prospects in localizing the functional activation change that is seen by OTS on the brain model. The proposed interface integrates an important visualization platform for neuroscience studies, assisting as a consequence neurosurgeons to localize key functional regions in the brain. Key-words: Optical Topography (OT), Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), OT-MRI Integration

T-type Ca2+ channels in thalamic sensory gating and affective Disorders
Low threshold Ca2+ currents mediated by T-type channels underlie burst spike activities of relay neurons in the thalamus. We have previously reported that knock-out mice for T-type channels show an enhanced nociceptive response to visceral pain, accompanied by an increase in tonic spikes in the absence of burst spikes in thalamic relay neurons. These results raised a possibility that T-type cha...

ultimodal environments seek to create computational scenarios that fuse sensory data (sight, sound, touch, and perhaps smell) to form an advanced, realistic, and intuitive user interface. This can be particularly compelling in medical applications, where surgeons use a range of sensory motor cues.1-4 Sample applications include simulators, education and training, surgical planning, and scientif...
متن کاملCommentary: Oscillatory Neuronal Activity Reflects Lexical-Semantic Feature Integration within and across Sensory Modalities in Distributed Cortical Networks
Research from the previous decade suggests that word meaning is partially stored in distributed modality-specific cortical networks. However, little is known about the mechanisms by which semantic content from multiple modalities is integrated into a coherent multisensory representation. Therefore we aimed to characterize differences between integration of lexical-semantic information from a si...
متن کاملThe Thalamocortical Projection Systems in Primate: An Anatomical Support for Multisensory and Sensorimotor Interplay
Multisensory and sensorimotor integrations are usually considered to occur in superior colliculus and cerebral cortex, but few studies proposed the thalamus as being involved in these integrative processes. We investigated whether the organization of the thalamocortical (TC) systems for different modalities partly overlap, representing an anatomical support for multisensory and sensorimotor int...
